Why do some men batter? – Theories in intimate relationships
- Psychological Theory
- Childhood abuse – a personality that needs to be controlled
- Personality disorder (borderline personality)
- Psychopathology, that is, social personality
- Psychological disorder or problem (past traumatic stress, poor impulse control, low self-esteem, alcohol and substance abuse)
- Sociological Theory
- This is a learned behavior ,mostly learned within the family.
- A partner and/or victim is always caught up in the cycle of violence and forgiveness.
- An example is where violence may be an acceptable form of settling disputes.
- Partners with good financial, social contact and prestige pose threats to accomplish over their partners from lesser income or social privileged families.
- Feminist or Societal Structural Theory
- Male partners use violence to control and limit the independence of their female partners.
- Societal traditions of male dominance have been used to support and sustain inequity in relationships.
- Violent Individual Theory.
- Many batterers are violent beyond domestic violence
- Most have prior criminal records.
- Some abusers tend to lack strategy in conflict resolution.
- Many have very high egos.
