Technology Abuse is a form of Controlling Behaviour Using Tech Tools to facilitate Abuse.
Forms of Abuse
- STALKING: Harassing, Persecuting, Trailing the targeted Victim with Unwanted and Obsessive Attention.
- HARASSMENT: Subjecting their victims to Aggressive Pressure or Intimidation. The Abuser makes Repetitive small-scale attacks.
- COERCION: Persuading their Targeted Victim against their will to do something by force, threats or torture.
- ISOLATING: Abuser severs/cuts off all social and emotional tiesĀ except to him through Cyber-Surveillance and GPS monitoring
- CONTROLLING: Also referred to as coercive control, and it is all of the above.
Basic Forms of Technology Abuse in Domestic Violence
- Cyber-Surveillance: involves the Use of connected devices or apps to Monitor Places and People. An abuser could use a computer, tablet or phone to hack their victim’s devices. The intention and desire are to monitor, harass, threaten, or harm the victim.
- ABUSE involving Texts, Photos, and Videos. This is doneĀ without the victims’ consent and is also termed “revenge porn.”
- Cyberstalking and Online Harassment.
- Recording
- Spoofing: This can apply to emails, websites or phone calls. This is the act of disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known source.
- GPS Monitoring.
- Electronic Surveillance: Use of cameras and other household devices
Partner, Ex-Partners, Abusers can and do Gain Access to their Victims.
- Women’s Home Devices
- Women’s Personal Devices
- Women’s Online Accounts
- Children’s Toys and Devices-Xboxes, Playstations,e.t.c hacked into so the Abuser can trace location, monitor conversations, and access the victim’s accounts.
