“The Dangerous Lie We Were Taught”

Growing up in many African communities, we were taught that suffering in silence is a sign of strength. We were taught that a woman who speaks out is disrespectful, and that a ” little” or “small” slap is just a man “disciplining” his wife or ” his babe”.

As respectable married women, we are expected to pray harder, persevere longer, cook better, and never speak about what happens behind closed doors.

But, what if I told you this kind of thinking-this normalisation of emotional, physical, psychological, and financial abuse is not only unfair, outdated, but very dangerous.

What if I told you that every time you say,” It wasn`t that bad !” you are enabling abuse. You permit for it to happen again because unless stopped it definately will reoccur. What is worse is that “our children are watching. www.unmasking-domesticviolence.org
